A healthy forest needs space. Trees are constantly competing with each other for light, water and nutrients. When a forest becomes too dense, trees can hinder each other's development. Dunning is therefore an important part of professional forest management.
With thinning, it is carefully determined which trees are preserved and which trees can be harvested. The goal is not simply to remove trees. By creating targeted space, healthy and strong trees get better conditions to grow further.
More space for healthy trees
In a dense forest, less sunlight reaches the soil and the lower parts of the trees. There is also competition underground. Tree roots must share the available water and nutrients with more and more trees.
Removing part of the trees creates space again. The remaining trees can therefore develop a stronger crown and a better root system.
A well-executed thinning can also help to make the forest more resistant to drought, storms and other forms of natural stress.
Thinning and biodiversity
Nowadays, forest management is not just about wood production. Biodiversity is playing an increasingly important role.
By creating variation in age, tree species and open spaces, a more varied forest is created. In some places, more light reaches the soil, giving shrubs, herbs and young trees a chance to develop.
This in turn provides living space and food for insects, birds and other animals.
